KOTA SAMARAHAN: An additional left-turn lane will be built at Samajaya roundabout as a short term measure to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Assistant Minister of Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the RM1.2-million project is undertaken by Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching and will start middle of next month and is expected to complete within a month.

He pointed out that traffic congestion is a matter of concern for everybody and the government is taking a short-term measure to reduce the problem.

“With the completion of Batang Sadong and Samarahan bridges, coupled with the increasing population and as we can see the volume of traffic between Kuching and Kota Samarahan has increased and is becoming a matter of concern for all of us…so for this reason, the government is taking a short-term measure to reduce traffic congestion in the area,” Julaihi told reporters yesterday.

He had earlier attended a briefing with JKR Kuching and Kota Samarahan divisional engineers Awang Fadillah and Siti Fairuz respectively and senior staff for an update of traffic flow between Kota Samarahan and Kuching.

Julaihi also pointed out that few proposals were discussed during the briefing on the long-term measure to address traffic congestion between Kota Samarahan and Kuching.

The proposed left-turn lane.

“We are looking at the possibility of how best we can solve traffic congestion between Kota Samarahan and Kuching and that was discussed during the briefing…few proposals have been brought up which will be further studied and evaluated by the government,” Julaihi, who is Sebuyau assemblyman, said.

He declined to reveal any specific project, saying that it was still in the proposal stage.

Present were Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang and Muara Tuang assemblyman Dato Sri Ali Mahmud.
