The two-storey Sibu Express Boat Terminal is set to be upgraded, allowing for more systematic passenger flow and comfort.

SIBU: A proposal to upgrade the two-storey Sibu Express Boat Terminal allowing for more systematic passenger flow and comfort of commuters is still at the design and documentation stage.

Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi told The Borneo Post when asked on the status of the proposed upgrade.

“We have not commenced renovation works just yet. It is still at the design and documentation stage. Expected to start probably in June (this year),” he said when contacted recently.

Under the proposed renovation, the upper floor of the building will be turned into an Enforcement and Operation office.

According to Hatta, the ground floor will house arrival and departure halls besides a waiting area, lounge and a convenience store.

He noted on average, the terminal handled about 2,000 passengers per day, while a few days before Gawai Dayak celebration, the volume can surge up to about 8,000 daily.

He pointed out that the major facelift when completed, will allow a more systematic flow of passengers and provide greater comfort to commuters.

“It will help to minimise (the congestion) as the operation will be more systematic with all these facilities being provided. There will also be cargo access ways at both sides of the terminal,” he said.

On top of that, he revealed that those passengers bound for immediate boarding will be segregated from those waiting for boat arrival.

“(There will be) Separate areas for arrivals and departures. Those porters who are carrying cargo will have to use the cargo access ways that will be constructed at both sides of the terminal. This will help to minimise congestion. The ticketing counter shall be incorporated in the renovation,” he said.

Separately, strict safety measures are continuously implemented by SRB on a daily basis to safeguard the safety of passengers.

An observation at the terminal here yesterday, noted that passengers were required to complete their particulars and furnish their tickets at the SRB counter before allowed into the departure area.
