Safety of commuters, passengers always top priority — SRB

An express boat plies the Rajang river. Such mode of transportation is still the main way of reaching longhouses in the upper parts of the river.

SIBU: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) will continuously stress on the importance of safety among boat operators and commuters, as it gears for this year’s Gawai Dayak celebration.

Sibu assistant controller Hatta Morshidi said SRB personnel will on the ground as they have been in past years, to check against overloading and on the presence of safety equipment.

“As usual, we will be emphasising on safety for the coming Gawai celebration. We will ensure operators do not overload their vessels or overcharge passengers.

“Safety equipment such as provision of life jackets will also be strictly monitored,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday on the board’s preparation for this year’s Gawai Dayak.

The Sibu Expres Boat Terminal handles about 2,000 passengers a day, with the figure surging to about 8,000 daily in the lead up to Gawai Dayak.

River transport remains the chief mode of transportation to the upper reaches of the Rajang river.
